Most OEM coil suspensions have a difficult time supporting heavy front loads like winches, brush guards and snowplows. If your coil springs are totally squished under a load, the lack of shock absorption can be harsh on your backside, especially if you spend long hours sitting in your vehicle while clearing snow. Insert these helper springs in between the individual coil loops in your front coil springs to help defeat driver fatigue and to better support heavy front loads.
Each doughnut-shaped spring has H-shaped channels at the top and bottom that fit to a rung of each coil in your front coil springs. Inside each round spring, a core of microcellular polyurethane foam adds cushioning between your coils. Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at the Sumo Spring Front Custom Helper Springs for a Front Coiled Suspension. Now, this is gonna be available for a bunch of different vehicles, whether it be a truck, SUV, or van, like we have here today. Now, you're gonna want to make sure to use our fit guide on etrailer.com to make sure that you're getting the proper Helper Springs for your vehicle. Now, the way that these work is actually creating a nice little, progressive cushion barrier for those coils. So, instead of the spring just compressing down, it gives it a little bit more of a fight, but it's also nice and soft, that way, it's still giving you compression, so it's not gonna be a harsh ride. And in fact, it should settle it out quite a bit.
And if your front is loaded down this is a great way to kind of bump that back up, to get at riding level, and it's just gonna make driving a lot more comfortable, and a little bit more short footed. Some typical applications would be, a minivan that is loaded down with the family and maybe some accessories on the roof or in the back. Whatever it may be, if it's fully loaded, your suspension is having to work a little bit harder. And the great part about this is, is it pops in place, there's no maintenance required and it's gonna keep up with the heat. Any oil or chemicals that you might find on the road, it's not gonna break down.
So once it's in place, you're gonna get that added comfortable driving, whether you're loaded or not. Now, it's not gonna bump up your weight capacity per say, so, you're not gonna be able to hold more on your vehicle, but what it's gonna do is actually give your suspension the most bang for buck to fight against that load. So it's really gonna let it work a little bit easier as it kind of supports it. So, that's a great way to enhance your suspension without having to completely change your suspension. Now, obviously we have a minivan here today, but they're all gonna install about the same.
And this is really gonna be great for guys that have those front hitches with snow plows or just any front storage of the vehicle with weight up front. Even heavy brush guards can really weigh down the front and just take away a nice, smooth driving experience, and it's gonna be kind of a rougher ride just having that weight already compressing it. So, this just takes that constant pressure on those Springs and just kind of makes it a little bit more supple, and it can handle that weight quite a bit better. Now we're out on our test course and this is gonna give us a good baseline of how it is stock and that way you can really see the difference once they're actually installed. As a lot of suspension components are, you really can't tell a quantifiable difference as far as measuring it, but it really comes down to the way that it feels.
So, I'm gonna kind of get my first impressions here, and we'll see how it improves. So we're gonna start by hitting some bumps here, kinda simulate some rough road or just kinda uneven services back and forth here, kinda get the suspension to work. Then we're gonna come up to a slalom. So, we're gonna actually see that suspension as we go side to side and some of the sway that's involved with that. And that's kind of where these can come into play, is it's not necessarily gonna reduce the sway a ton but it's gonna give those Springs a chance to kinda fight back without just compressing down. And having that little bit of dampening there, should make it a lot more responsive, especially, when the van is loaded up, it's gonna make a world of difference. With our Helper Springs installed, we're gonna go back on that same test course and kind of run it through the same test, just to see the difference. So hitting the bumps first. Immediately, I can tell already that the suspension just seems a little bit heavier duty in a good way. It's just handling it kinda a little bit more graceful. It doesn't feel like the shock is really getting a huge workout. It feels tougher, absolutely out the gate. I'm not loaded up right now, so, it's really not gonna really shine until you have it loaded up, but immediately even without weight, it's already made a big difference. So, even in the slalom here, back and forth, it's making this minivan feel a lot sportier. So, I'm pretty impressed. For a really quick install, this is a great way to get a lot better handling and just overall better suspension feel, and be able to support heavier loads on your vehicle. Now, this is what it's gonna look like before you install it, and you can see it's got a slit here. And these grooves look almost identical, but we actually have one that's deeper. So, the deeper one is gonna sit on the bottom of the spring and you're gonna want this on the top. Now, installation is gonna be about the same for pretty much every vehicle. We're doing it on this van here, but really you're just gonna want to jack up the front suspension, and that way that suspension hangs down. So, make sure you have your emergency brake on. You might wanna chuck your rear wheels and then also jack it up from here and put a jack stand under there just to be safe. But once that tire stops dropping, you know that you've fully extended that spring out, it's gonna make it a lot easier to get this in. You'll see a lot of dust on these which is kind of normal for a car that's driven quite often. So, what I'm gonna do is just with a soapy water solution, just spray all of this down. And that's twofold, not only to make sure that it's a nice clean surface we're putting it on, but it's also gonna help kind of lubricate it to get it placed on for its installation. So, once we spray that down, just go through wipe down those coils and try to give it the best smooth surface to actually hop onto it. Now, once you have that surface clean, again, take that deeper groove, and that's gonna go on the bottom here. And we're looking to get it in the second or third kinda gap in between the coils. But really for first initial, whatever kind of works best. So, the fact that this is kind of open, that's gonna work well. We can always move this up. So, what I will do actually is start with one edge, kind of wrap it around here and we'll put our groove in. Now, at this point, it's gonna be kind of tight here, but I'm just gonna kind of really press this in to get that leading edge in. So, once that's in, what you can do is actually rotate this a little bit and then just kind of work your way. And you can see that soap water really helping to be able to move this. And now that I have it in place, I'm just gonna make sure that I have it set up exactly where I wanted on the Springs. So, I'm gonna rotate it right about here. Some of the kits actually come with zip ties. And you can see there's a hole here, and you would just simply run that zip tie through and then kind of zip it around the coil. And I guess the thought process would be to keep it to where it's not gonna move, but honestly, once this spring is compressed it's gonna have enough pressure. And seeing how much pressure it took to get in there, I don't think they're really necessary. But if your kit comes with them, you might wanna run those through, and that way you have a little bit more peace of mind knowing that they're not gonna rotate down. I did not remove the front tire as I add more than enough room to slide them in. Quick and easy install. The front did not need to be trimmed.

Installed the SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs for suspension - Rear Axle on my Ram 1500. Easy install, if you follow their enclosed directions. It took longer to jack up the truck and secure it than the actual installation. Any negative comments that were written about the installation are most likely based on the ability NOT to read and follow the written directions. Took a drive after installation and immediately felt the difference in handling. Actually installed them to assist in the 30-foot travel trailer I am towing with a 1500 Ram. No doubt it is going to assist with the sway bars already on the trailer. In my opinion, it was a good investment for the price vs the results.

2021 Highlander front with drive V6. Product is right on the money for description. My Bass boat is 3900lbs, definitely took a 1-1/4 out from the sag. Also, extremely less bounce. I would prefer to have air bags, though no one makes them for my year. This is a great alternative.

Works exactly how I needed. The Ride is still very nice. There's about 350lbs with the weight of the box & rack. Suspension in the rear used to sag a bunch, even with a 2" suspension lift.

I have a 2015 Subaru Outback. When towing it went from a mushy rear end to a nice stiffness. Max tongue weight is 275# and with 220# on a recent trip (~2000# trailer weight) it only squatted the rear end about an inch (after rolling back and forth to let it settle).
Previously I was getting instability above 60mph especially when hitting the bumps at the ends of bridges. On my recent trip I was able to hit 80mph with the car feeling totally planted.
When totally empty you do get just the smallest hint of a 'truck like' ride but I typically carry some tools and other stuff all the time and that dampens it.
For install I found it helped to sort of feed the sumo into the coil as you kinda roll your hand over the part juming into the groove.

Shipping was fast and packaged well. The material looks and feels durable and easy to install but is a little loose on the springs, and not as snug as I thought. Although once I did a test drive around the neighborhood it tighten itself on the coil springs and hope it stays that way!

Installation was a bit more difficult than anticipated, however, for an 81-year-old guy, most everything is. The SumoSprings work just fine. I feel like they've reduced the sway and increased stability while hauling our Tab320 trailer with our Subaru Outback. Service from eTrailer was fast.

Installed the CSS-1168R Coil SumoSprings Custom Helper spacers on a 2011 Honda Ridgeline 4 wheel drive rear springs. Installation took about 45 minutes including removal of tires. Once spacer was started the installation was easy.
Zip ties were a little more difficult because of the dust strut covers installed by Honda.

Pretty easy to install. During my first drive with them installed I heard a lot of thumping even over small bumps, but it seemed to work itself out on the second drive. I think it helps level out the slight sag in the rear of the car, and the front wheel drive which used to slip frequently when towing gets better traction. Be aware that for a 2005 Highlander, there are no holes or zip ties, and you can't get the Helpers to stay much higher than the lowest coil. I think them sliding down is what eliminated the thumping.

Did not fit the 2022 Subaru Outback as advertised making these a total cash grab on etrailers part. Buyer Beware. Incorrect fitment guide means expensive mistake.

Have had these in for a year. Easy to install. I did have to trim some off to install, but super easy with a razor knife. Bought these to help level out my Pacifica and they’re awesome. Fully loaded and it still squats a bit but no where near as bad as it used to. No effect on daily driving. If you’re thinking about it, just do it.

I was very excited about these for my 4x4 2015 Nissan Frontier. I am not completely displeased with them because they do make a mild difference over bumps, but they aren't worth over 100 bucks no way, the fact that I had to CUT THEM to fit due to them being too long made me feel like the company does not due their research when manufacturing them. It was so long that it lapped the beginning on it, so in order to have them installed as shown on the instructions I had to cut nearly 3 inches off... Which meant I had to comely install them, mark then uninstall, cut to fit, then install again. For an item to cost this much I expected better build quality.
Bang for buck it's not worth it, it's overpriced and I wouldn't recommend them for that cost.

I ordered these for my RAM Promaster 3500 because I had heard from fellow owners that they are a worthwhile addition, for increased stability on the road. The instructions are good, and they weren’t too hard to install myself. They are kind of expensive for a couple of rings of dense foam/plastic, but I guess they must be petty heavy duty. I look forward to my next trip to see how they perform.

Install went fairly easy once I figured out the best spot to put the jack to lift the van. Really helped to have an oil filter wrench to get the old springs off the back. Took it out for a drive after an much better cornering and much less effect from wind and 18-wheelers. This was on a fairly windy day. No big difference in softness of the ride.

This was put on the rear of a '23 toyota highlander to help with it's lack of weight capability. It has helped and it didn't affect the ride quality.

The installation was quick and easy. I did remove the tire to ease in the installation, it just made it easier for me. It took longer to stage the pictures for the review than install them. I took a measurement I think I gained a 1/4 to 1/2 inch in lift and doesn’t seem so floaty

Not easy to install. Took to a trailer shop for installation. Seem to stabilize my vehicle when towing, haven't towed after dark yet to see if oncoming traffic flash their lights at me.

Took a chance and ordered rears for my 2021 AWD Pacifica even though the AWD model wasn't listed. After cutting a couple of inches off they fit perfectly! Coils are tight so you'll need to unbolt the bottom shock bolt to gain an extra inch of decompression. Once installed there's no difference in ride hight or ride with the van unloaded. Once loaded up it gives the extra support needed to prevent scraping my muffler pulling in and out of driveways. I know this mod voids the warranty, but it was a chance worth taking.

- Recommended Weight Distribution System For A 2022 Subaru Ascent Towing A Small CamperThough it will ultimately depend on the loaded weight of the trailer you go with, the Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU36FR can be a great option. This is a weight distribution system that has sway control as well, but the big plus with this one is the weight range it can handle. You want to try and get as close to the middle of the systems capacity with your loaded tongue weight, and with this have 200 pounds at the minimum and 600 pounds at the maximum, it will be right where you need it to be....

- What is The Difference In the SuperSprings Coil SumoSprings # CSS-1145 & # CSS-1145R? The Coil SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs # CSS-1145 and # CSS-1145R are exactly the same. We also have the # CSS-1145F which is the same. We created the Rear # CSS-1145R and Front # CSS-1145F specific products to eliminate confusion when looking up the products by vehicle application.
